Is tooth decay passed on from parents?

Article written by Elite Dental Group

You may be worried about tooth decay and tooth loss if your parents or grandparents suffered from tooth loss due to decay. Oral health concerns like gum disease, a misaligned bite, and oral cancer are often due to genetic factors. Early screenings however can help to reduce a patient’s risks. However, cavities and decay are not considered genetic problems. Although some people can have teeth that are more prone to decay due to placement and bite.

Tooth decay and cavities are often due to some of the following factors:

Poor oral hygiene habits – Children learn from watching their parents. This means that if your parents had poor dental hygiene habits, there is a good chance that you have learned and follow after them. On the other hand, if a child sees their parents brushing twice daily and flossing at night, they would be more inclined to take care of their teeth.

Diet – Diet can also play a part in tooth health. Families that eat unhealthy foods which are processed and high in sugar are at a higher risk of tooth decay. While parents who are focused on preparing homemade healthy food using fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean meats, are known to have healthier teeth.

Smoking – If a child sees a parent smoking they may be more inclined to try smoking as a young adult. Smoking weakens the gums and stains teeth, giving them an unhealthy color. Smoking is also the leading cause of mouth cancer.

To reduce your risk of cavities, the best plan of action is to brush teeth twice daily, floss before bed, and eat a diet that is full of fresh produce and low in added sugars. If you do smoke, make an effort to quit as it will not only benefit your oral health but improve your overall health and wellbeing. Two annual dental exams are also recommended as this will help a dentist identify any issues and rectify them before they become a concern.
